How to Locate Exhaust Leak?

Locating leaks in the car exhaust pipes is tricky, but it can be done with patience and using the right tools. Follow the steps below to find leaks in your vehicle’s exhaust pipe.

Inspecting the Pipe Visually

• Park the car and let the exhaust system cool, as a hot exhaust pipe could cause burn injuries.
• Start by visually inspecting the exhaust system, including the exhaust pipe, muffler, and catalytic converter, and see if there is any rust, holes or other signs of physical damage.
• Turn on the engine and listen for unusual noise from the exhaust system. A rattling noise can indicate damage to the exhaust pipe, while a whistling indicates a hole or crack. Pay attention to the noise level and location if it’s coming from one specific area.

Soap and Water Solution

Mix a dish soap and water solution and apply it to the suspected area of the exhaust pipe using a brush or spray bottle. Leaks will cause bubbles to form, indicating the location of the leak.

Smoke Machine

You can use a smoke machine to identify leaks in the pipe. The machine pumps smoke into the exhaust system, and any leaks will allow the smoke to escape, making them easy to locate.

Preparing Exhaust Pipe for Repairing

Before repairing an exhaust pipe without welding, you have to create a good bonding surface. You will clean the exhaust pipe using a wire brush or sandpaper to eliminate debris, dirt, and other contaminants. Secondly, use an isopropyl alcohol-dipped towel to wipe the scratched surface and let it dry.

How to Seal the Leak in Exhaust Pipe?

You can follow the method I have discussed below.

1: Exhaust Pipe Repair Tape

Use this method if you are dealing with a larger hole. It’s a high-strength fibreglass wrap made of a heat-resistant material that can withstand high pressure and temperatures up to 1100°F.

Apply the exhaust repair tape to the damaged area, ensuring it covers the hole or leaks completely. Press down firmly to ensure a tight seal. Now heat the tape on the exhaust pipe using a heating gun and spare it 20 minutes cure time. If you don’t have the heating gun, then spare 20 minutes setting time and 2 hours cure time.

2: Exhaust Repair Putty

If the hole is small, you can also use an epoxy putty such as a JB weld. These putties come in two tubes, i.e. the hardener and resin. Extract both parts out of tubes in equal ratios and keep mixing them until they become the same color.

Use a scraper or knife to apply the mixture on the leak and spare it 20-25 minutes cure time before starting the engine. You can also read the manufacturer’s instructions to get more reliable results. It’s a hassle-free and easy-on-the-pocket solution.

3: Exhaust Pipe Repair Clamps

If the hole in the exhaust pipe is not large enough, you can use an exhaust clamp to fix it. The process is quite easier; all you need to do is to wrap the clamp around the leak in such a way that the leak is centered in the middle of the clamp. Now tight the clamp bolts using a wrench or pliers. Be sure to tighten it enough to create a secure seal but not so much that it damages the exhaust pipe.

4: Apply Aluminum Patch

This is similar to method 1, in which a patch seals the leak irrespective of size. Get a heavy-duty scissor to cut the aluminum patch according to the hole size or leak. Wrap the patch around the hole to confirm whether it’s the same size as the hole.

Now apply a metal adhesive or epoxy on the exhaust pipe and wrap the aluminum patch around it, so there is no bubble or wrinkle. Let it dry for 2-3 hours before getting to the road.

5: Exhaust Flex Pipe

You can use flexible pipes if the above techniques are not applicable. These pipes are designed so that you can bend them in any direction. Besides, they withstand high temperatures and vibrations.

Measure the damaged area of the existing exhaust pipe and mark it. Now cut the flexible pipe according to the length of the damaged area and slip it over the damaged area. Get the hose clamps over the flexible pipe and tight them using a screwdriver.
